Brattle Completes a Multilingual Project in Senegal

Dallas-based Brattle Publishing Group, in collaboration with its strategic partner RTI, has completed a key project for USAID’s Renforcement de la Lecture Initiale pour Tous (RELIT) initiative. This initiative focuses on improving early-grade reading instruction across Senegal, particularly for children speaking French and five Senegalese national languages: Wolof, Pulaar, Seereer, Mandinka, and Soninke.

Brattle worked closely with RTI International to design innovative page layouts and production templates for a multilingual kindergarten program. The program included distinct French and Senegalese national language versions. Overall, Brattle produced more than 10,000 pages of educational material and 38 component books, such as teacher guides, student activity books, and picture books.

“Collaborating with RTI and its partners was an enriching experience. We gained valuable insights into Senegalese society and the literacy challenges they face. In turn, we developed flexible designs tailored to meet the needs of diverse learner populations,” said Richard Lena, President of Brattle Publishing. Brattle’s work supports bilingual instruction by accommodating both French and national languages in Senegal. Lena remarked, “Drawing on our experience in Central Asia, we were able to create adaptable designs, and working with local professionals ensured that the program resonated with the educators.”

Additionally, Brattle provided a remote four-part workshop on instructional design, content development, and project management, attended by over 25 Senegalese education professionals. This effort strengthened local capacity for developing bilingual teaching materials for early learners.
